Recommendations: Whip It!
For those of you who like Ellen Page (Juno) as much as I do, this is a real treat. Whip It! is a film about doing what you want for yourself and learning that people will support you, even though it might not have been the plan they had for you. It's a film I think might not appeal to everyone out there, but it's still endearing enough to be liked by many. Oh, it's about rollerskating. The roller derby. I really enjoyed it!
Dutch cinemas to boycott Alice in Wonderland
Apparently, someone high and mighty has decided that the Netherlands will not air Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in prominent theaters. Something to do with Disney's release rules, and the DVD. I can't actually be that bothered to go look it up, but I just wanted to say that I am peeved. This is one of the few films that I have been looking forward to for months, because be honest, Alice, a rabbit, Johnny Depp, Tim Burton and 3d can't go wrong.
Oh, I've found a quote (or rather, article, which I'll quote).
THE HAGUE — Dutch cinema owners said Monday they will boycott Disney's Alice in Wonderland to protest plans for the film's release on DVD less than three months after its big screen debut.
"The four big cinema houses, Minerva, Pathe, Wolff and Jogchems -- representing between 80 and 85 percent of all cinemas in the Netherlands, have decided not to show the film," spokesman Youry Bredewold told AFP.
"Disney is not keeping its part of the bargain. There is an agreement between movie distributors and cinema owners that there must be a window of at least four months between the cinema release and the DVD release."
In this case, Disney planned for the movie to hit Dutch big screens on March 10, followed on June 1 by the DVD launch.
This would mean fewer cinema customers, said Bredewold, "as people won't have to wait long for the movie to come out on DVD" -- which is normally cheaper to rent than the cost of a movie ticket.
"We will lose money due to our decision; we expected this to become one of the most popular movies of 2010," added Bredewold, who is spokesman for Pathe and a representative of the National Board of Cinema Owners.
"But we decided we need to send a message to the whole industry: if you don't accept our terms we will never show your movies again."
Cinemas in other European countries and the United States have taken a similar stance on the film, he said.
No Disney spokesman in the Netherlands could be reached for comment.
Drop of air pressure
I totally forgot that I had started on another painting very intently with no intention of ever uploading it because I had lazily traced the outlines of a photograph, just wanting to practice colouring. Especially hair. Then I got bored and dropped everything altogether, as if there was a sudden loss of air pressure. Thought I'd put it up anyway... It's Ryan Reynolds, an actor who stars in The Proposal alongside Sandra Bullock. Brilliant comedy acting.
Chris Pine
I seem to have a slight obsession with a certain Star Trek film. My inspiration just got sparked. I drew Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk in the film, in my previous post. And Oops! ...I did it again! Life's a funny thing sometimes! (Image now deleted, though!)
The film, by the way, is a good one to see. You don't have to be a 'Trekkie' to see it, believe me, I'm not. It's got good acting, good special effects, good looking men (if you're into that) and women (if you prefer them), a good plot and a very classic soundtrek (see what I did there?).
Quirky Faces
I was watching a movie today and saw this actor who makes incredibly quirky faces all the time. It prompted me to draw him, pulling a quirky face of course. It's much more difficult than your average magazine photoshoot pose, as everything is asymmetrical, but it's so much more fun. Can anyone guess who it is? You'll get a cookie.
